Version 1.3 Release Date + Campaign Announcement

Version 1.3

We are happy to announce that the version 1.3 update will be coming out on May 11th, in approximately 12 days.

As previously mentioned, this update will encompass the following:

  • 4 MC personality choices: this may affect dialogue, plot, and choice branches to varying degrees
  • Base Boyfriend can now follow any career to completion
  • 1 additional random event for each personality
  • Additional choices added to several branches
  • New scene variations based on your & BF's names, and some other minor factors
  • Sub/dom options for sexy scenes (note that these are not always 1-to-1 variations; we focused on matching the options to the pre-existing CGs)
  • New choice branches allowing you to stop sexy encounters at certain points
  • ~2-5 hours total of additional content added to the game
  • Several missing/broken pronoun variables have been fixed
  • Many, many typo & grammar fixes
  • Many reworded/rewritten lines for better flow and/or clearer meanings
  • Phone graphic while calling BF
  • Color-coded daily diary choices
  • More SFX, screen shakes, etc. added to some scenes

Needless to say, this has been a huge undertaking for Reine Works, quite a few months in the making, so we ask that if you are particular about bugs and/or typos that you wait a few days post-release to play the game while we fix anything that's found.

Kickstarter Campaign

We’d also like to announce that we’ll be holding a fairly basic, straightforward Kickstarter campaign for SSWK starting on May 13th. We’d like to raise the funds to hire assistant writers to speed up the process of making the necessary compatibility changes to the Expansion Pack so we can release it ASAP, without the huge delays 1.3 faced due to the game's structural changes. *

If you've already purchased the game, there's no particular benefit to ordering it again on Kickstarter -- they will not be getting any exclusive content, although we will have some returning & brand-new physical goods available there.  However, we would greatly appreciate any shares about the campaign on social media once it launches.

In the meantime, if you’d like to show your support, you can follow the campaign right here! Thank you!

* Talking as myself for this explanation: SSWK has essentially been a passion project. Even one year after launch, I am still footing development costs out-of-pocket because of the immense size of the project and comparatively low purchase price. The idea behind the project was always to be an accessible one, so I do not regret pricing it as such, even now. I have /personally/ still not seen a penny for my work and the countless hours I've put into the project due to this, as well, however -- and once SSWK itself is done, we have a previously promised spin-off that will require development. So, even if asking for additional funding this late in development is not a perfect solution, I would highly appreciate your understanding. Thank you.

I always hoped that there would be an update, or further expansion.

Not just because it's an awesome game and the concept reminds me of the manga Absolute Boyfriend, but because I really really enjoyed playing it? And I want to write fanfics about this series because I'm a dork and that's what I do, so excuse me while I fling myself into the sun----!

P.S. Thank you for all that you do.

Thank you so much! We're glad you enjoyed it! Absolute Boyfriend was definitely among SSWK's inspirations.

We do still have... 2, I believe, additional random events that will eventually be written & added to the base game as a distantly future update. There are actually a few seasonal/holiday events that I would also love to add to the game eventually, but I don't know how feasible they'd be due to the extra writing & art costs (maybe they'll be stretch goals if the campaign goes super well?). Other than that, once the Expansion Pack is released, we'll be moving onto the SSWK clicker spin-off game we promised for the IGG campaign many years ago, which will most likely add to the game's canon (it'll either be a direct sequel to SSWK or an alternate universe--undecided at the moment).

Beyond that, we're hopeful that the SSWK series will be able to continue, somehow, whether that be through a proper sequel or a spiritual successor, but that honestly just depends on the game's sales from Version 1.3 onward. If we're lucky, the game's user rating will go up on Steam, which will increase sales. But, for now, fingers crossed.

Whoa, that's awesome! I loved the game but I did read some reviews and critiques. To see that you guys listened to the feedback is really, really cool.

I'm sad that you haven't made any money from it. Hopefully it will change in the future. Do you guys have a patreon or something?

Thank you! There'll still be a few (significantly smaller) updates to come after 1.3, but they will probably only be after the Expansion Pack releases.

I personally don't mind not making anything off SSWK, but the budget issue does make it exceedingly difficult to create updates in a timely manner. So, hopefully, the campaign sees some level of success and we can just power through what's needed to be done.

We did have a Patreon at one point, but we closed it because the time required to upkeep it versus the income sadly wasn't worth it (I believe our peak earnings were at around $40 USD/month, but it usually sat around ~$20 USD). We might bring it back on a trial basis for a month or two at some point, but we don't have our fingers crossed that it'll do any better a second time around.
